Italian wines are categorized into two main types: the more affordable and widely available ones for everyday consumption, and the higher-end varieties that cater to connoisseurs. Among the former is Pinot Grigio, a crisp white wine that has become a staple in many countries. The latter includes Barolo, one of the world's best red wines, as well as numerous other high-quality options.
From a legal standpoint, Italy's wine classification system must adhere to EU regulations. At its highest level – protected designation of origin (PDO) – Italian wines fall into two categories: DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita), meaning "controlled and guaranteed geographical indication," which represents Italy's elite wines; and DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), or DOP (Denominazione di Origine Protetta), meaning "protected geographical indication," which comprises Italy's basic PDO wines.
At an even lower tier – PGI-protected geographic indications – Italian producers offer another category of wines with IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) labels featuring both a geographic name and often grape variety names. For example, while DOCG Brunello di Montalcino must come from specific regions within Tuscany for production, IGT/IGP Tuscan wines may hail from anywhere within the region.
Italy boasts 20 distinct wine-producing areas corresponding to its regions. Many top-tier wineries can be found in northern regions such as Piedmonte in northwest Italy, Tuscany in central north Italy, and three non-officially recognized Venetian areas collectively known as Tre Venezie; however quality grapes also thrive in southern parts of the country making their mark on global markets.
